Dear Colleague,

The Mathematical Sciences Department of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez is seeking applicants for its 2007 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program. This program is funded by the NSA.

The program is entitled "Puerto Rico Experiences in Mathematics and Undergraduate Research (PREMUR) at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez". PREMUR is an eight week (June10-August 4) program designed to provide its participants with a meaningful research-oriented experience in mathematics. Undergraduates will work under the direction of the research leader, John Little, Professor of Mathematics at College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA. Seminars will be on Computational Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, and applications.

Eligibility:

  1. Have completed three semesters of Calculus and a course in either Linear Algebra or Abstract Algebra, with a preference for those with Abstract Algebra
  2. Have a minimum GPA of 3.0, though allowances will be made for those students who can show a record of improvement
  3. US Citizen or permanent resident.

The participants will receive the following benefits:

  1. stipend of $2,200
  2. travel expenses to and from Puerto Rico
  3. room and board for eight weeks
  4. the opportunity to present their research
